What Do You Need to Apply for a Medical Marijuana Card?

Marijuana use and legalization is a major political issue that’s being analyzed and debated across the United States. As things currently stand, 37 states have medical marijuana laws on the books, and 18 have legalized recreational marijuana.

However, medical marijuana is very different from recreational marijuana, largely because the standards for them are different. The biggest and most important difference is that you need a card to qualify for medical marijuana.

We don’t often talk about how to apply for a medical marijuana card, and the result is that many of us don’t know how the application process works. That’s why we’ll discuss it in this article.

Research Qualifying Conditions

Before pursuing a medical marijuana card, you should first try to find out if you even qualify. The majority of states have legalized medical marijuana, but the list of qualifying conditions varies by state.

In Illinois, for instance, roughly 40 conditions can qualify someone for a medical marijuana card. Meanwhile, in Maryland, only nine conditions qualify someone to get a medical marijuana card.

Talk to Your Doctor

Medical marijuana laws state that you must be diagnosed with a qualifying condition. Keep in mind that confirmation isn’t the same thing as a diagnosis. A doctor can tell you that, in their opinion, you might have a certain condition, but it’s not valid until you go through the official process of diagnosis.

Proper diagnosis vs conjecture is more of an issue for mental conditions, such as anxiety and autism, since physical conditions are often much easier to confirm.

While many conditions can qualify you for a medical marijuana card, only a doctor can approve you for a card. Not all doctors can do this, so you’ll need to research which doctors are certified to recommend a medical card. Once you’ve been diagnosed, and your doctor recommends you for a medical card, the next step is to apply.

Apply for a Card

Gathering the materials for a medical application is often much harder than the application itself. In most cases, you can fill it out online. Those who live in Missouri, for example, can apply at www.highprofilecannabis.com.

Your state website should also have a way to get the proper forms and possibly fill them out. If you don’t know where to find the proper website for your state, a quick Google search can point you in the right direction.

If your application gets approved, you’ll get your medical card in a few weeks. Once you have it, it’s valid at any dispensary in the state.
